I was asked by an acquaintance if earthbound spirits all went to heaven or do some go to hell. That's a good question. And I don't have an unequivocal answer. I think if I share a true story, a person can get a better understanding of this issue.
First, though, we have to answer the question of what hell is. Contrary to Christian Tradition, I don't see evidence of an eternal everlasting fire where humans are tormented forever. It's not because of emotionalism that I believe this.
Years ago I researched the subject of hell extensively. It's interesting to note that there is not one verse in the Old Testament of a fiery eternal place of torment. I won't go into the details here but will only share a link to my views on a Catholic site. I used the name ahimsaman72 at that time. Here's the link:

Now, In my worldview, "hell" is in simplest terms "separation from God", the absence of goodness, light and love, whereas "heaven" is intimate union with God in the presence of light, love and goodness.
I believe in universal reconciliation, wherein at some point in time God will be "all in all". He will reconcile everything back to Himself, destroy evil and purify all people. There is Scriptural evidence for this, which I detailed in my long thread linked above.
So, back to the original question.
I've never, ever, met an earthbound spirit that chose hell (remember - separation from God). There was only one case I've had in which a little girl would not go into the light. I don't know where she is now and that bothers me. But, I know that God is just.
Let me explain one instance of a spirit whom crossed over.
This young man (whom I will call Jason) was 17 years old. He committed suicide because he was filled with grief over breaking up with the person he was in love with. The person whom he was in love with became a close friend of mine. I remember when my close friend told me he died. It really hurt them and felt responsible for Jason's death.
It took some 5 months before I actually spoke to Jason. In the beginning he really didn't like me very much. And he really didn't wish to speak to me. But, as time went on, he began to see that I was an okay guy and at last spoke to me. And, I was able to speak to him. He was fearful that he would go to hell. He was afraid that those in the light would punish him. He was afraid that his sins couldn't be forgiven, especially since he had committed suicide. Finally, I gave him comforting words and assured him that all would be well in the light. And so he went.
But, I'm getting too far ahead.
When Jason died, he immediately came before God. God told him that he didn't fulfill his purpose while on earth because he ended his life too soon. So, God gave him instructions on what he was to do before he could move on to be with Him continually. His "job" was to help the person he loved get through some things and then he would be restored to a right relationship with the Father. He was meant to do it while alive, but made the bad choice to end his life.
The first time I spoke to Jason was a month and a half ago, when I was helping my friend through a really tough time. I went to visit him in Canada. Jason had been dead for 6 months by then. As I was speaking to my friend, he basically fell into a trance-like state and Jason began to speak through him. Spirits enter through the breath.
Jason began to speak through the body of my friend. He told me who he was. I asked him if he served the Lord Jesus. He said simply, "of course". He told me that my trip wouldn't be what I expected and that if I wanted to help my friend I needed to do "X". Much of that conversation was a blurr. What I do remember is that Jason said that I had to trust God completely in this situation. He kept repeating that.
For the next several days and into 2 weeks later, my wife and I both had spoken to Jason. The job that he was to do for God involved my wife and I, so we had many conversations. We never sought this situation. But, I couldn't deny that God had these plans and it was up to us to choose the will of God even though it was difficult.
It's funny that during the time we were visiting with my friend we spoke a lot to Jason, even funny things. He has a sense of humor. We talked to him as if it wasn't a strange thing. This had become a normal part of our lives - speaking with the dead.
Towards the end of my friend's situation, we finally asked Jason what happened after he died. He told us that he went straight to God in spirit after entering the light. He said that God immediately told him that it was not his time to come, but by his own freewill he had taken his life and circumvented God's plans.
He was given a heavenly body (a spiritual body) - white, sparkling clothes and light surrounded him, although not as bright as the angels in heaven. He retained his face and body features, although his hair was now kept very neatly :) He was told that he had to finish God's plans and then he could return to be with Him.
The next day after this conversation, my friend's situation was resolved, absolving Jason of his duties. We haven't seen or heard from Jason since.
This is a very concise telling of the story. There is more, but it involves things I don't want to get into here. My interaction with this spirit is the longest and most telling. The other cases I've had were very short. So, I thought I would share this one.
So, what is the answer to the original question? I don't know. But,I've never met a spirit that went to a fiery place called hell, although we could easily say that as a wandering or earthbound spirit, they are actually in some kind of hell because they are absent from the body and separated from the Father.
